Before a listing or showing

Vacant units often have keys spread among former occupants, contractors, and previous agents. Rekeying before showings gives the listing agent a known set of keys. Ask when you call if you need help with how keys for showings will be handled.

Around a closing

Until closing, work is authorized by the current owner or the person they designate in writing. After closing, the new owner authorizes it. If the timing matters, tell us both dates when you call; availability for a specific day is confirmed, not assumed.

New occupants and investment turnovers

Between tenants, the usual goal is that no old key works. Lock rekeying keeps the existing hardware and changes the key; a lock change replaces worn hardware or upgrades it. For a building with many units or shared doors, the property management page covers coordinated work across multiple doors.

Rekey or replace?

If the locks work well and only need new keys, rekeying is usually the simpler route and several doors can be keyed alike. Replace when a lock is worn, damaged, the wrong grade for the door, or the owner wants a different style or a restricted key.

What if the unit is being recovered through an eviction?

Lock work then happens only as directed by the City Marshal or Sheriff executing the warrant; see eviction locksmith.

Can a listing agent authorize a lock change?

Only with the owner’s permission. We confirm the owner’s authorization — or the new owner’s after closing — before changing or rekeying locks.

What about keys for showings?
